The Cambridge Handbook of Technology and Employee Behavior PDF
By:Richard N. Landers
Published on 2019-02-14 by Cambridge University Press

Experts from across all industrial-organizational (IO) psychology describe how increasingly rapid technological change has affected the field. In each chapter, authors describe how this has altered the meaning of IO research within a particular subdomain and what steps must be taken to avoid IO research from becoming obsolete. This Handbook presents a forward-looking review of IO psychology's understanding of both workplace technology and how technology is used in IO research methods. Using interdisciplinary perspectives to further this understanding and serving as a focal text from which this research will grow, it tackles three main questions facing the field. First, how has technology affected IO psychological theory and practice to date? Second, given the current trends in both research and practice, could IO psychological theories be rendered obsolete? Third, what are the highest priorities for both research and practice to ensure IO psychology remains appropriately engaged with technology moving forward?

CHOOSING WORK-LIFE BALANCE - The Keys To Achieving What Many Think Is Unattainable, by Walter H. Chan, Ph.D.Regrettably, for Many People, a Balanced Life is an Ideal rather than a reality.Whether consciously aware of it or not, there is a common human desire in us to want to live well and feel good. In recent years, much attention has been given to and research done in the area of |work-life balance| and |personal well-being.| While it is of fundamental importance to human beings, it is often forgotten or given low priority until something undesirable happens, such as poor health, absenteeism, strained relationships, workers' compensation claims, and violence in the workplace. These unwelcome situations can be further accentuated by economic downturns. Some people have also been awakened by mid-life crisis, triggering them to ask tough questions about who they are, what they are here, and where they are going, etc. Most people accept work as a matter of course as they grow up. Studying, job searching, working, relationship building, and retiring are expected life stages. How many people can honestly say that they find enjoyment in most of their lifetime? Even though unhappy, people often do nothing about it. Partly because they are not aware of what they are going through and partly because they do not know that a different way of living exists. For some people, life seems to be only a series of recurring events and activities. They go through life but miss the full meaning of it. They may accept approaches and situations because that´s how they grew up and that´s what they know. They may blame others for their problems, feel unable to change, or even not realize the need for change. There is an empowering way to approach life. Coming to life's detours and dead ends serves as an opportunity for introspection and questioning. Feeling frustrated and dissatisfied with current situation provides an incentive to look into the |what,| the |why| and the |how| of purposeful and satisfying alternative possibilities. The negative energy can be turned into positive actions. By pausing and asking probing questions, you can be in a better position to face life's undesirable situations head on and find solutions for improvement. Should work-life balance be an issue of concern to you? Your honest answer to the following simple questions will shed some light to it.Do you feel exhausted at work even early on in the week?Do you often feel overwhelmed, driven and losing focus?Do you see that you have little time for your family members, even spending a few vacation days together?Do you observe that you have no time to have a leisure meal together with your close friends without feeling guilty?Do you find that, other than work, you have no time for yourself to even read a book quietly in the past many years? If you have answered |yes| to a number of the above questions, this book is for you. Using the Umbrella Model (see Chapter 3), this book takes a holistic approach to examining and understanding work-life balance and the steps you can take to achieve it. If you are at a crossroads, your situation is not hopeless or insurmountable. You have to make changes; however, the good news is you can. This book proposes a framework to help you better understand what you have control of in order to keep your life in balance. You need the knowledge and skills to create the right balance between work and other life obligations. Life issues need to be understood and properly handled. Because many of life's issues are linked, taking time to appreciate their inter-connectedness and responding to them holistically would provide a better chance of success. You need core health, insights into yourself, and also life management tools, supported by positive mindsets and project management techniques, to attain work-life balance. The Umbrella Model

The Corporate Lattice PDF
By:Cathleen Benko,Molly Anderson
Published on 2010-08-03 by Harvard Business Press

With roots planted firmly in the industrial age, the corporate ladder has been the metaphor used to describe the prevailing one-size-fits-all model for success. At its heart, the ladder is derived from inflexible, hierarchical, organization models in which prestige, individual rewards, information flow, power and influence are tied to the rung each employee occupies. Yet the workplace as we know it is in transition -- evolving away from the linear, one-size-fits-all model of the corporate ladder toward a multidimensional approach that Cathy Benko calls the corporate lattice. This book will serve to widen an organization's strategic lens, representing a fundamentally new way to work and run a company. It offers a framework to help senior leaders and HR directors harness the talent in their company in a way that provides a strategic advantage, not only for recruiting but also for achieving and maintain better individual performance. In the bestselling book Mass Career Customization (Harvard Business Press/2007), Cathy Benko and Deloitte provided the breakthrough MCC dashboard for understanding the important variables of individual employees' career-life profiles, but she also coined a new metaphor -- the corporate lattice -- as a way to think about the changed career landscape. This book delves much deeper into the power of the lattice for organizations, fully exploring its contours and applying it to real-life practice throughout a company. It explores how the corporate lattice model creates value by: 1. Ensuring a flow of talent into and through the organization. 2. Increasing the efficiency of and return on organizational investments. 3. Improving financial and operating results through greater employee engagement. The three-part framework of the book presents specific ways managers and organizations can use The Corporate Lattice to manage talent, measure results, collaborate across teams, engage employees, and reor|

Language wears many hats, but its most important job is to help us name or describe what's in the world. Words define us, our actions, even our existence. And just when you think that you have all the words you need, you discover new ones, hear new uses for old ones or see them mutate right before your eyes—a neologism is born. Those neologisms are actually one of the best ways of keeping tabs on the way our world and culture are changing. One of the people who's been keeping tabs is Paul McFedries, the president of Logophilia Limited (logophilia is Greek for |the love of words|). His scorecard is Word Spy, a daily newsletter that has been reporting from the neological frontier since 1998 and that has more than 100,000 visitors a month and more than 12 million page views. In Word Spy, McFedries demonstrates how new words both reflect and illuminate not only the subcultures that coin them but also the larger culture in which these groups exist. Neologisms give us insight into the way things are even as they act as linguistic harbingers of what's to come. Each chapter of Word Spy is a cultural snapshot, a slice of the zeitgeist that focuses on a specific idea or sociological phenomenon, with an emphasis on the words and phrases that it has generated. These snapshots cover various aspects of modern life, including relationships, business, technology, war, aging, multiculturalism, and even fast food, all the while introducing us to hybrid words: If your kids can't seem to get away from their computers, they may be addicted to |fritterware| (time-wasting game software). If you're a new mother with a passion for petitioning, you may be a |lactivist| (breast-feeding activist). And if you keep finding yourself staying way later at the office than you ever imagined, you may be suffering from |presenteeism.| Word Spy is an exciting and informative travelogue through the evolving landscape of our language and, consequently, the cultures and subcultures that continually mold and shape not just the language but all of us who speak it.
