After years of giving of herself to her family and community, Grace Beiler, an elderly Amish woman, faces her first Christmas since losing her husband of fifty years to his battle with cancer. With her children grown and moved onto different communities, Grace is feeling more than a little depressed. She begins to reflect upon her own life and wonder if she has properly fulfilled her promise to be a servant of God. As Christmas draws near and her depression becomes stronger, she starts receiving little gifts in the mail and left on her doorstep. She realizes that she has a |secret sister,| but has no idea who it might be, for each gift seems to relate to a different event in her life. Each gift causes her to reflect and remember important moments. Just when she thinks she might have figured out who the secret sister is, a new gift arrives with a different meaning.

Romance Fiction and American Culture PDF
By:William A. Gleason,Eric Murphy Selinger
Published on 2017-05-15 by Routledge

Since the 1970s, romance novels have surpassed all other genres in terms of popularity in the United States, accounting for half of all mass market paperbacks sold and driving the digital publishing revolution. Romance Fiction and American Culture brings together scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and publishing to explore American romance fiction from the late eighteenth to the early twenty-first century. Essays on interracial, inspirational, and LGBTQ romance attend to the diversity of the genre, while new areas of inquiry are suggested in contextual and interdisciplinary examinations of romance authorship, readership, and publishing history, of pleasure and respectability in African American romance fiction, and of the dynamic tension between the genre and second wave feminism. As it situates romance fiction among other instances of American love culture, from Civil War diaries to Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks, Romance Fiction and American Culture confirms the complexity and enduring importance of this most contested of genres.

How will they manage without her to care for them--especially six-year-old Chris? And will her new beau, Hans Bontrager, continue to court her despite the many miles between them? Yet even as Lena Rose holds on to hope for a reunion with those she loves most, she discovers that Lancaster holds charms of its own. Is she willing to open her heart to new possibilities?

Train Up a Child PDF
By:Karen Johnson-Weiner
Published on 2007 by JHU Press

Train Up a Child explores how private schools in Old Order Amish communities reflect and perpetuate church-community values and identity. Here, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner asserts that the reinforcement of those values among children is imperative to the survival of these communities in the modern world. Surveying settlements in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, Johnson-Weiner finds that, although Old Order communities have certain similarities in their codes of conduct, there is no standard Old Order school. She examines the choices each community makes—about pedagogy, curriculum, textbooks, even school design—to strengthen religious ideology, preserve the social and linguistic markers of Old Order identity, and protect their own community's beliefs and values from the influence of the dominant society. In the most comprehensive study of Old Order schools to date, Johnson-Weiner provides valuable insight into how variables such as community size and relationship with other Old Order groups affect the role of these schools in maintaining behavioral norms and in shaping the Old Order's response to modernity.
