Self Help, Inc. PDF
By:Micki McGee
Published on 2005-09-08 by Oxford University Press

Why doesn't self-help help? Cultural critic Micki McGee puts forward this paradoxical question as she looks at a world where the market for self-improvement products--books, audiotapes, and extreme makeovers--is exploding, and there seems to be no end in sight. Rather than seeing narcissism at the root of the self-help craze, as others have contended, McGee shows a nation relying on self-help culture for advice on how to cope in an increasingly volatile and competitive work world. Self-Help, Inc. reveals how makeover culture traps Americans in endless cycles of self-invention and overwork as they struggle to stay ahead of a rapidly restructuring economic order. A lucid and fascinating treatment of the modern obsession with work and self-improvement, this lively book will strike a chord with its acute diagnosis of the self-help trap and its sharp suggestions for how we can address the alienating conditions of modern work and family life.

The Passion Paradox PDF
By:Brad Stulberg,Steve Magness
Published on 2019-03-19 by Rodale Books

The coauthors of the bestselling Peak Performance dive into the fascinating science behind passion, showing how it can lead to a rich and meaningful life while also illuminating the ways in which it is a double-edged sword. Here’s how to cultivate a passion that will take you to great heights—while minimizing the risk of an equally great fall. Common advice is to find and follow your passion. A life of passion is a good life, or so we are told. But it's not that simple. Rarely is passion something that you just stumble upon, and the same drive that fuels breakthroughs—whether they're athletic, scientific, entrepreneurial, or artistic—can be every bit as destructive as it is productive. Yes, passion can be a wonderful gift, but only if you know how to channel it. If you're not careful, passion can become an awful curse, leading to endless seeking, suffering, and burnout. Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness once again team up, this time to demystify passion, showing readers how they can find and cultivate their passion, sustainably harness its power, and avoid its dangers. They ultimately argue that passion and balance--that other virtue touted by our culture--are incompatible, and that to find your passion, you must lose balance. And that's not always a bad thing. They show readers how to develop the right kind of passion, the kind that lets you achieve great things without ruining your life. Swift, compact, and powerful, this thought-provoking book combines captivating stories of extraordinarily passionate individuals with the latest science on the biological and psychological factors that give rise to—and every bit as important, sustain—passion.

|Murdoch's Flagshipprovides the first in-depth overview of the Australian, mapping its uneven and uncharted progress across its first three decades. While the Fairfax and Packer media groups have received detailed historical coverage over the years, Rupert Murdoch's News Limited and the Australian have not been given the same systematic attention by historians. Denis Cryle draws on a vast amount of secondary print material, his own extensive interviews with past and present staff and a detailed reading of the Australian's newspaper files to capture the vitality of the newspaper over three seminal decades.|

Law, Institution and Legal Politics PDF
By:Ota Weinberger
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

It gives me great pleasure to offer this foreword to the present work of my admired friend and respected colleague Ota Weinberger. Apart from the essays of his which were published in our joint work An Institutional Theory of Law: New Approaches to Legal Positivism in 1986, relatively little of Wein berger's work is available in English. This is the more to be regretted, since his is work of particular interest to jurists of the English-speaking world both in view of its origins and in respect of its content As to its origins, Weinberger war reared as a student of the Pure Theory of Law, a theory which in its Kelsenian form has aroused very great interest and has had considerable influence among anglophoone scholars -perhaps even more than in the Germanic countries. Less well known is the fact that the Pure Theory itself divided into two schools, that of Vienna and that of Brno. It was in the Brno school of Frantisek Weyr that Weinberger's legal theory found its early formation, and perhaps from that early influence one can trace his continuing insistence on the dual character of legal norms -both as genuinely normative and yet at the same time having real social existence.

The Dream Manager PDF
By:Matthew Kelly
Published on 2007-08-21 by Hachette UK

A business parable about how companies can achieve remarkable results by helping their employees fulfill their dreams Managing people is difficult. With disengagement and turnover on the rise, many managers are scratching their heads wondering what to do. It's not that we dont dream of being great managers, it's just that we havent found a practical and efficient way to do it. Until now . . . The fictional company in this remarkable book is grappling with real problems of high turnover and low morale -- so the managers begin to investigate what really drives the employees. What they discover is that the key to motivation isnt necessarily the promise of a bigger paycheck or title, but rather the fulfillment of crucial personal dreams. They also learned that people at every level need to be offered specific kinds of help and encouragement -- or our dreams will forever remain just dreams as we grow dissatisfied with our lives and jobs. Beginning with his important thought that a company can only become the-best-version-of-itself to the extent that its employees are becoming better-versions-of-themselves, Matthew Kelly explores the connection between the dreams we are chasing personally and the way we all engage at work. Tackling head-on the growing problem of employee disengagement, Kelly explores the dynamic collaboration that is unleashed when people work together to achieve company objectives and personal dreams. The power of The Dream Manager is that simply becoming aware of the concept will change the way you manage and relate to people instantly and forever. What's your dream?

Secrets of Six-Figure Women PDF
By:Barbara Stanny
Published on 2009-10-13 by Harper Collins

According to the Department of Labor, the average woman in 1998 was bringing home less than $25,000 a year. For every dollar that a man makes, a woman makes between 50 and 75 cents, and that is hardly news. But what you may not know is that, quietly and steadily, the number of women making six figures or more is rapidly increasing. Currently, over fifteen million women make $100,000 or more, and the number continues to rise at a rate faster then for men. And these women come from every industry - psychologists, dot com founders, consultants, freelance writers, and even part-timers. What makes these particular women able to do so well in the workplace? Fueled by curiosity, Barbara Stanny, author of Price Charming Isn't Coming: How Women Get Smart About Money (Viking Penguin), set out to research this phenomenon. What she discovered was that, though the high-earning women she interviewed came from different backgrounds and had had greatly different work experiences, they all had certain characteristics in common. Secrets of Six Figure Woman: Surprising Strategies of the Successful High Earners will be a ground breaking book for high earners who want to ensure their wealth, enhance their success, and learn from others who are in the same boat. It will also offer inspiration, guidance, and motivation to those who aspire to make more.

In today's increasingly diverse, global, interconnected business world, diversity and inclusion (D&I) is no longer just |the right thing to do,| it is a core leadership competency and central to the success of business. Working effectively to combat unconscious bias across differences such as gender, culture, generational, race, and sexual orientation not only leads to a more productive, innovative corporate culture but also to a better engagement with customers and clients. The Inclusion Dividend provides a framework to tap the bottom-line impact that results from an inclusive culture. Most leaders have the intent to be inclusive, however translating that intent into a truly inclusive outcome with employees, customers, and other stakeholders requires a focused change effort. The authors explain that challenge and provide straightforward advice on how to achieve the kind of meritocracy that will result in a tangible dividend and move companies ahead of their competition.

There's never been a better time to create the career you love. This book shows you how. By the time you retire you'll have spent a third of your life working. That's far too long to be stuck in a job you hate or even just tolerate. You want one you find rewarding - in head and heart, as well as wallet - but where to start? The good news is the future lies in your hands. With the right actions and attitude you can power ahead with a career you enjoy. To grasp this opportunity, you'll need to challenge your existing thinking and approach the world of work with new eyes, but you won't be doing it alone. This book will show you 12 proven ways to fast track your career, so when you leap out of bed every Monday morning you'll be ready to take on the world. The book is written by James Reed, Chairman of REED, Britain's best-known recruitment brand and employer of over 3,500 people. Over the past 25 years he has helped millions of people to find jobs, and in doing so has talked with countless job seekers and thousands of recruiters as well as his own business network. This has given him a deep insight into what makes some people successful in building a rewarding career, while others are stuck in the confusion and frustration of not landing the job they want. Through these multiple observations and conversations, James has learned that there are 12 key ways to build and sustain the career you want: · Look in the mirror . . . (ask 'who am I?', 'who do I want to be?' and 'how am I going to become that person?') · Go to parties (embrace the magic of invitations and conversations) · Play Poohsticks (find the fast-flowing water and locate your career in that) · Be selfish (do what you enjoy and you'll perform well at it) · Kick start some good habits and kick out some bad ones (the things you do every day are the ones that make the difference) · Pick your targets (make sure you are where you are because of the choices you've made) · Think in days and decades (focus on the immediate present and dare to imagine the unforeseeable future) · Be powerful, be prepared (planning and preparation are essential for a great career) · Showcase your work ethic (work hard, learn from your mistakes - and show it) · Ask for help (this is something too many people find difficult) · Find a boss you can learn from (the more and faster you learn, the further you'll travel) · Change your job and change your life (if you don't enjoy your job, keep looking until you find one you do) Today's job landscape allows you more freedom to carve your own path than ever before. Along with this, however, comes the responsibility of shaping your mind and actions to make your career work for you. This book shows you how.
